A teether is a sensory toy: it helps to develop your baby’s touch, taste, sight, and smell. Multiple rattles and teether might help your baby’s development and awakening.
It’s the baby’s first toy since Antiquity: it was invented by Archytas, a disciple of Plato. At the time, the rattle was made of metal or clay and had a small rock inside. It already had multiple shape possibilities. In the Middle Ages, it was a luxury object made of bones, horns or even coral. Inside it was a wolf’s tooth that was said to protect the kid against evil spirits bringing sickness and death. Royal rattles were then literally works of art. During the Renaissance, we used to craft these toys out of ivory, crystal, or silver, and the ornament inside still had the pretention to protect the kid. The rattle-for-everyone appeared in the 19th century and was made of tin plate. Today, rattles can be seen in every shape and texture, but wood’s one of the favorites.
